Wines of the Month and Wine of the Year

At the end of each meeting, the members of the Club vote for their favourite wine of the evening.  The winner is the Wine of the Month.  Once a year, at the April meeting, which is also the Club's AGM, the Wines of the Month are tasted again against each other.  From the votes of members on the night, the winner is declared the Wine of the Year.

In a refinement from 2007/08, the voting at each meeting is for a red wine and a white wine of the night.  The committee will then decide which of the winning wines will be the Wine of the Month and will go forward to the Wine of the Year tasting in April. 

At the April 2011 meeting, we held the Wine of the Year tasting for 2010-11.  Unusually, we had two dessert wines that had been selected as Wine of the Month, as well as four whit wines and four red wines.  All the wines were of an exceptionally high standard, making the evening an extremely interesting and enjoyable event, which started with a glass of sparkling wine provided by Dee to celebrate her 50th birthday! 

At the end of the evening, the Mar de Frades Albarino 2009 from Galicia in Spain (available from Sommelier's Choice at £9.40) was voted the white wine of the year and the Yalumba FDR1a Barossa 2004 (available from Flagship Wines at £23.99 and from The Wine Society at £20.00) was voted the red wine of the year.  However, the dessert wine of the year and Wine of the Year 2010-11 is the Royal Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos Blue Label 2005 from Hungary (available from Laithwaites at £20.00 for 50cl).
